Have you ever gone for a ride on a droid? It's not the greatest but... it's like a horse ride...on a metal seat...so it doesn't take long for it to become quite a pain in the back.
I looked around the streets at the people passing by, they seemed sad. They were going somewhere, minding their own business, ignoring my existence. Is this our future? I should save these poor people!
At the next crossroad, the droid I was riding suddenly came to a stop and a glowing red light began to blink rapidly.
"Are you still there, Noname? My droid has stopped, what should I do?", I asked.
Noname replied: "Is anything odd about the droid? Like a warning sign?"
"Uh, I think so, what about the red light flashing really fast?"
"I think the model you have shuts down when you are too far away from the police department. To get past this, you need to input the distance to your destination." was Noname's answer.
"But how could I possibly do that if I don't know where I'm even going!?"
"Well, it's your lucky day, here's a map I prepared earlier!"

write a program that calculates the distance between the red and blue dots on the map moving along roads, then outputs it to the console.

 As you can see on the map, all blocks are of equal size 

 meters. Try to solve this on a piece of paper before we move on”, Noname's voice said in my head.

Ok, looks not so complicated. I made some calculations in my head:

From my location there are 3 “width” blocks and one “height”:


height = 175
width = 75
Result = width + width + width + height = 75 + 75 + 75 + 175 = 400 meters.

"My answer is 400 meters", answered I.
"Correct! Is your droid moving again?"
"No, it's not. I have no idea how to translate my calculations into a program!"
"Oh, my friend, it is virtually the same! Here you are:"

"Yeah! It's pretty close, but what does that '=' mean in your code?", I asked.

" Noname was surprised: "Oh! I haven't told you about variables! Let's fix this."

A variable is a named part of computer memory.

 You can think of a variable as a box of memory to which you give a name. Inside this box, you can store any value you want.

think of computer memory as an endless number of boxes, and you can name them and store values inside. Once you do it, you have access to your box, and you can access the value or put a new one there.

"Try creating a variable yourself!" Noname exclaimed.

Now that those two variables have been created and given a value, memory can be represented as 2 boxes:

I asked: "Is there any way to change the value I gave to the variable or it stays the same forever?"

you can change the value that you give a variable as many times as you want

You can also copy the value of one variable to another.

 This will make it so both variables have the same value, but are still stored as separate memory (boxes). This table can help you to understand."

you need to use the print command and put the variable name in the parenthesis, like this

", Noname reminded, "you can also use basic mathematical operations with variables, as I showed you in the first example."

Noname added: "And for future reference, you could use multiplication in your code as well as other math operations, so these 2 code snippets are equivalent."

"Programmers tend to prefer shorter code if it does the same work and is easy enough to understand."
